What’s your goal today? When you have a goal, it should lead to an outcome, results, and a successful end to your efforts. It’s important to aim for something, and when you do, set your aim high! “Shoot for the moon, and at worst, you’ll hit the street light!” There are proverbs that underscore this in opposite language. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything!” Also, “blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall not be disappointed!” Obviously, that’s not the kind of goals to have in life; standing for nothing, and striving for nothing. Our goal should be a life that results in respect.
Apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, gives us a godly goal and the outcomes you can expect. He says your goal should be, “to live a quiet life, minding your own business, and working with your own hands.” This can be summed up as staying quietly in your lane in life, taking care of your personal “stuff,” and faithfully doing your job and fulfilling your assignment. Albert Einstein stated that, “A quiet and modest life brings more joy than a pursuit of success bound with constant unrest.” The Apostle Paul tells us that the outcome of this goal will be respect from people who aren’t followers of Jesus. Our faith will be validated by our character, competence, and work ethic. A practical outcome will be financial independence. (You will be dependent on no man)
What a great goal for every day Christian living! “Live a quiet life, mind your own business, and work with your own hands!” That’s awesome biblical advice! As a matter of fact, it’s God’s word and directives for following Jesus. There’s a dangerous tendency to separate the practical arena in our life from the spiritual. Paul makes it apparent that they are interwoven. Paul is underscoring the fact that “people will receive your message when they respect the way you live.” Your reputation should precede you and that reputation should be good! Determine today that you will focus on your assignment and stay in your “lane in life.” Determine to be thankful for everything God has entrusted you with, and, work hard in every area of your life. Your reward for pursuing this goal will be validation of your Christian witness, producing respect from others, as well as financial independence and security. Shoot for the moon!
